The night of March 28, 2025, marks a significant moment in Yoruba history, as the incoming Alaafin embarks on a sacred journey that will culminate in his coronation as the 46th Alaafin of Oyo. This time-honored tradition, deeply rooted in the cultural and spiritual heritage of the Oyo Empire, begins with his solemn retreat to the revered Sango Shrine.
As dusk falls, the Alaafin-elect, accompanied by the principal eunuchs, the Oyomesi, traditional priests and priestesses, Baales, princes, princesses, and an eager assembly of the public, enters the shrine to undergo the essential Sango traditional rites. Within the sacred confines of the shrine, he will spend the night, immersed in rituals that affirm his divine right to the throne, under the spiritual guidance of the high priests.
According to a post made available by Arewa Omo’ba, at the break of dawn on Saturday, March 29, the most awaited moment arrives. The coronation takes place at the Koso Shrine, where Baba Mogba, the chief custodian of tradition, formally bestows upon him the prestigious Historical Sango Crown. This crown, imbued with the fiery essence of Sango, the Yoruba god of thunder and lightning, symbolizes authority, power, and the sacred bond between the Alaafin and his people.
With the crown placed upon his head, the new Alaafin steps forward, emerging from the shrine as the officially crowned ruler. The gathered crowd, consisting of nobles, chiefs, and commoners alike, erupts into a unified chant of reverence: ‘Kabiyesi o!’—an acknowledgment of his supreme authority.
This historic event is not just for the royal court but is open to the public. Everyone is invited to witness the coronation of the 46th Alaafin of Oyo, a ceremony steeped in tradition, heritage, and the enduring legacy of the Yoruba people.
Join us at the Sango Shrine on Saturday, March 29, 2025, at 9 AM, to partake in this grand occasion and witness history in the making.
